Paul Myers of Brooks Institute of Photography is preparing to travel to India for five weeks with a group of students setting forth on a life changing adventure. As part of their training for the journey, Paul had the students meet at the Santa Monica peer to sharpen (or discover as the case was often) their skills at capturing in-field audio coupled with story telling imagery.
Steph, Kiya and I trailed the pack, soaking in Santa Monica on our first trip to the busy city. It is always with a sense of open engagement and jittery enthusiasm the first steps in a new place find me. My camera opens wide to those prime inhalations. A landmark for the photographer is when the common takes this role. Still, there is nothing wrong with finding inspiration in the new. Take on the eyes of a child…

In a recent Venture to Ventura, well, here’s a look…
Steph trying to pry a ground-score away from Kiya…Kiya thought it a great game.
So many choices…oy yoy! What’s a girl to do?

Further now each day I rediscover more of the world around me
The one which calls me through dreams,
that which trundels forth mastigic principals.
Now I come to know you for certain, the unending source.

To add to the point, one of the goals of the, “Artist’s Way” is to embrace your inner child, to return to play. One of our group meetings we chose to meet at a park to picnic. In the spirit of the moment, we took to the swings…

Not pictured here are the illustrious Niki and the incredible Jack. The evening was a success as we (the adults) began again to love our forgotten selves while the children strove to become adults.

(That’s mineral water, not beer! So don’t get any crazy ideas!!!)

Over the past couple months I have been in engaged in a course called, “The Artist’s Way”, with some good friends and Steph. One of my goals in the course was to loosen up my photography, as all of the formal training in photojournalism had kind of locked me creatively. After a gallery viewing, we went to a sushi place in Ventura. Kiya got a hold of the green tea, and below are some images inspired by the ensuing caffeine buzz of a one year old.
